Lachin city

Lachin is located in mountainous area, southwest of Azerbaijan. It has borders with Kalbajar in north, khojaly, Shusha and Khojavend in east, Gubadli in south, Armenia in west. Surface is mountainous and north part is in south-west hang of Karabagh chain, north – in south-east hang of Mikhtoken chain, south-west – in Karabagh plateau. The highest peak is Gizolboghaz mountain (3,594 m). Rivers are Hakari and its branches. The region main has cespitose, mountain-meadow, brown mountain-forest and carbonate soils. Plant cover consists of meadows with bushes and rare woods.The vegetative cover consists of broad-leaved mountain woods (an oak, a hornbeam, a beech), sub alpine and Alpine meadows. The fauna includes a mountain mountain goat, the mouse-vole, the roe, a steppe pig, gray squirrel and other kinds. Climate is mild hot and cold. Administrative center is Lachin town. Lacin has a rich historical past. Lachin’s monuments are the valuable and rare monuments in Azerbaijan which can be compared with Azikh cave in Khojavend region and Taglar caves in Jabrail region belonging to I-II millennium B.C. At the end of XII century and at the beginning of XIII century, Alban Khachin princedom was founded in mountainous part of Karabagh. This princedom covered the area of Lachin. Zangazur zone was divided into two parts in 1920 and consequently, 3.105 square versts (including Lachin) of 6.742 square versts-area of Zangazur Province remained in Azerbaijan USSR, 3.637 square versts-area was given to Armenia. At this time, it was needed to found any administrative centre in Azerbaijan part of Zangazur. Thus, it was decided to create centre of region in te are between Lachin adn Abdalar villages. Taking the local relief and characteristcs of population into consideration while choice of name of the region writer Tagi Shahbazi Simurg announced te name of region as Lachin. Lachinn obtained region status in 1930. Weaving also developed in Lachin. The carpet knokwn as Gasimushagi in the world is related with this region.On May, 18th, 1992 the Lachin area has been occupied by Republic Armenia. There was a city, settlement (Gaygi) and 125 villages.
