Scotland has voted against ending its 307-year-old union with England and Wales, with the Scottish National party conceding defeat in the historic referendum.

55% of voters rejected First Minister Alex Salmond's prospectus for independence, while 44% decided to vote for independence. Consequently, Scotland made certain to stay in the United Kingdom. Final results are to be declared today.

Prime Minister Alex Salmond said they expect more powers to be granted to the Scottish Parliament. Meanwhile, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron congratulated in his Twitter the leader of the Better Together campaign Alistair Darling with a well-fought campaign.
