UEFA to select hosts for Euro 2020
19.9.2014

The UEFA Executive Committee will select the 13 host cities for the 2020 European Championship today. The announcement ceremony will take place at the Espace Hippomène, Geneva, Switzerland at 16:00 Baku time.

As Azerbaijan’s capital Baku is also among candidates, the delegation led by AFFA President Rovnag Abdullayev left for Switzerland. If the UEFA Executive Committee shows confidence in Baku, 4 matches of continent-wide championship will be held in our city.

The matches have been split into 13 different packages. There are 12 standard packages, including three group matches and one knockout round match (round of 16 or quarter-finals), and one package for the semi-finals and the final. Azerbaijan’s capital is also among 19 candidates. The candidates who submitted their bids by April 25 are: Azerbaijan (Baku), Belarus (Minsk), Belgium (Brussels), Bulgaria (Sofia), Denmark (Copenhagen), England (London), Germany (Munich), Hungary (Budapest), Ireland (Dublin), Israel (Jerusalem), Italy (Rome), Macedonia (Skopje), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Romania (Bucharest), Russia (Saint Petersburg), Scotland (Glasgow), Spain (Bilbao), Sweden (Stockholm) and Wales (Cardiff).

London and Munich have submitted bid dossiers for the semi-finals/final package.

Starting with the 2016 edition in France, the European Championship will have a new format, with 24 teams playing a total of 51 games over four weeks. For the 60th anniversary of the European Championship, first held in 1960, UEFA decided to organize the tournament across the whole continent.
