The Republican Seismological Service Center (RSSC) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) first prepared epicenter map of the powerful and destructive quakes, which occurred in the territory of Azerbaijan from 427 till 2012, chief director of the RSSC Gurban Yetismishli told APA. According to him, the map was prepared in the end of the last year and beginning of this year. The map contains information about above 5-magnitude quakes since 427, their history, human losses and destructions: “According to historical sources and instrumental observations, 223 powerful and catastrophic quakes occurred in this period.”
Yetirmishli said that the most powerful quakes in Azerbaijan occurred in Shamakhi in 1667, 1669 and 1671: “More than 100 000 people died in these three quakes. 10-magnitude quake occurred in 1667 in Shamakhi. Besides, the quakes in Ganja in 427, 1139 (Kapaz mountain collapsed and blocked Aghsuchay creating Goygol Lake), 1235 and in Shamakhi 1859 (the capital was moved from Shamakhi to Baku), 1902 are considered the most powerful quakes of the history of Azerbaijan.”
