26.4.2012

The English Language Day has been celebrated today in the Azerbaijani University of Languages on occasion of birthday of English playwright William Shakespeare within the initiative of “Language Days at the UN‎”. The event is aimed at promoting multilingualism and respect to cultural and linguistic diversity among the youngsters.

The poems in English were read and small scenes from Shakespeare’s works were performed at the event.

“Language Days at the United Nations” initiative was launched on the occasion of International Mother Language Day on 21 February by the UN Department of Public Information. It strives to entertain, as well as inform, by raising awareness of the history, culture and achievements of each of the six official languages among the United Nations community as well as to promote equal use of the six official languages of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) throughout the United Nations system worldwide.

Each of the six official languages will be celebrated by the United Nations on its designated day in new and creative ways, including unique information materials, special messages from United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and cultural events showcasing each language through music, art, poetry, food, theatre and film screenings.
