Azerbaijani gymnast Aliya Garayeva won the World Cup which was held in Penza, Russia.
The press service of Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation notes that Garayeva’s victory in the World Cup is the first as such in the history of the national sport.
She performed very successfully by winning gold in the exercise with the hoop, and bronzes in all-round and in exercise with the ribbon. She outstripped such Russian opponents as Darya Dmitriyeva and Darya Kondakova. Dmitriyeva finished second, while Kondakova was the eighth.
Moreover, I was able to defeat well-known gymnasts, including world champion Darya Dmitriyeva,” Garayeva said. “It was a joy to hear the national anthem and it reminded me the pleasant memories from various tournaments of international scale. Did I expect to win in the finals with a hoop? Yes, I always began to perform with the psychology of winning and with the aim to represent myself and Azerbaijan. This time I made small mistakes that ultimately did not prevent me to remain in the top of the list.”
This week, Azerbaijani national team will participate at the World Cup in Sofia.
