Azerbaijan becomes member of World Heritage Committee of UNESCO

Azerbaijan has become member of the World Heritage Committee of the UNESCO.
The 20th General Assembly of States Parties to the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage was held at the UNESCO headquarters within the 38th General Conference of the Organization.
The elections to the World Heritage Committee took place and Azerbaijan was elected a member of the committee.
The success at the elections, in addition to increasing the role of Azerbaijan in protecting the world heritage plays a major role in promoting its own heritage.
Maiden Tower and Shirvanshah's palace the Old City complex in 2000 and in 2007, the Gobustan National Historical-Artistic reserve was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The World Heritage Committee is responsible for the implementation of the World Heritage Convention, defines the use of the World Heritage Fund and allocates financial assistance upon requests from States Parties. It also decides on the inscription or deletion of properties on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
