Today is Azerbaijani national freedom movement leader Abulfaz Elchibey’s birthday.
Elchibey was born on June 24, 1938 in Kalaki Village of Ordubad Region of Azerbaijan. He graduated from the faculty of Oriental Studies of Azerbaijan State University in 1957. He was one of the leaders of national movement in Azerbaijan started in 1988 and founders of Azerbaijan Popular Front.
In 1992, Elchibey left Baku for Kalaki as a result of military insurrection in Ganja. Milli Mejlis, Azerbaijani Parliament cancelled his authorities of presidency and then elchibey continued his political activity as a leader of Azerbaijan Popular Front Party. Abulfaz Elchibey died on August 22, 2000 in Gulhane Military Hospital in Turkey after a siege of illness. His body was flown to Baku and given the state funeral in the Alley of Honors.
