Memory of great poet Samad Vurgun to be honored in Baku

Samad Vurgun was one of the great poets and play-writers of the Azerbaijani literature. He philosophically perceived the mysterious beauty of the country’s nature, the history of heroism of Azerbaijani people, our humanist values and reflected them in his poems and epics with a special romantic significance.

The 20th century of the Azerbaijani poetry is bound, for national character of its language, harmony, figurativeness to the creativity of Vurgun.

His poem 'Azerbaijan', epic poems 'Aygun'and "Mugan", as well as dramas in verse "Vagif" and "Insan" are the pearls of the national literature.

The importance of 'Vagif' in the process of self-realization of Azerbaijan people in the period of constant suppression of the Soviet regime, can be compared with the role of 'Korolu' opera by Uzeyir Hajibeyov.

His poetry penetrated deep into the hearts of readers because of its sincerity.

The poem "Parting Mother" was highly appreciated as the best anti-war work during a contest held in the USA in 1943. It was published in New York and distributed to military personnel after it was selected among the best 20 poems of world literature about the war.

Vurgun not only created new works in poetry but also was engaged in translation too. He translated Pushkin’s novel written in verse “Evgeniy Onegin” from Russian into Azerbaijan.

The poet also translated some works of Taras Shevchenko, Maxim Gorky, Ilya Chavchavadze and Jambul.

The 110th birth anniversary of great Azerbaijani poet Samad Vurgun will be commemorated with a solemn concert program scheduled for October 13 at the State Academic Drama Theatre.

The event that will feature poems by the legendary poet will begin at 7p.m., and be attended by relatives and friends, who will share their memories about Samad Vurgun.

The exhibition reflecting the life and creativity of the poet will also be organized during the event.
