“Leyli and Majnun” opera staged in US for the first time

“Leyli and Majnun” mugham opera by outstanding Azerbaijani composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli was staged in San Francisco, California, US. Azerbaijan’s Consulate General in Los Angeles told that the opera was staged during San Francisco World Music Festival. It is the first time that “Leyli and Majnun” is staged in the US.



Making a keynote speech at the event, Azerbaijani Consul General to Los Angeles Nasimi Agayev gave information about the history of “Leyli and Majnun” opera, said it was the first opera in the Muslim world. Following this, the diplomat presented special certificate of merit to Chingiz Sadigov, Azerbaijani people’s artist, famous pianist, who is living in San Francisco. Chingiz Sadigov was awarded for his merits in promoting Azerbaijan’s music and culture in the US and all over the world.

Following this, the performance was demonstrated. Young mugham singers Vusala Musayeva and Ilkin Ahmadov acted as Leyli and Majnun. They were accompanied by Imamyar Hasanov (kamancha) and Rufat Hasanov (tar), as well as orchestra composed of musicians from China, India, South Korea and US.

The opera was applauded by the audience. About 500 people attended the performance.
