Jabbar Vatanfada, director of Iran’s Energy Ministry’s department for CIS countries and boundary rivers, spoke about water transfer of the Araz River to Lake Urmia.

Jabbar Vatanfada said it is planned to take some measures to prevent drying of Lake Urmia due to the climate conditions.

“These measures also include water transfer of the Araz River to Lake Urmia. Of course, water transfer of the Araz River to Lake Urmia will be possible through the agreements with Azerbaijan, necessary discussions will be held with Baku. We want the Azerbaijani government to give consent to it for the sake of neighborhood and assistance to environment,” he said.

Jabbar Vatanfada also touched on the Azerbaijani media reports about Mehri hydropower plant being constructed over the Araz River between Iran and Armenia.

“There is no need to strengthen water and collect it as reserve for Mehri hydropower plant. This plant will work on water current,” he said.
