Among 10 Directors General of UNESCO, which is designed to promote the cultural and ethnic diversity in the whole world, seven of them were representatives of Europe and North America, only one of them was a Muslim.
Says article of Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia, candidate for UNESCO Director General Polad Bulbuloglu, published in the Daily Star.
According to him, such a situation cannot continue. Polad Bulbuloglu noted that currently, the cultural monuments of the West prevail on the list of the World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO: “The UNESCO administration should properly reflect the membership of 195 countries. UNESCO is one of the oldest and most important UN agencies. Today, it is more famous for its list of cultural heritage. Nevertheless, its activity goes far beyond this.”
Polad Bulbuloglu also touched upon the activity of incumbent Director General of the organization Irina Bokova. He called her a strong and skillful leader, noted that the activity of the organization was disrupted by the serious lack of funds, especially after the United Stated refused to pay the contribution to UNESCO: “The new Director General should make UNESCO more independent in terms of finances from its biggest members. New methods on receiving funds through strategic partnership with corporations and the civil society should be taken.”
