Baku Metro has begun testing five new carriages produced by Transmashholding JSC, the metro told on Monday.
According to Baku Metro, five carriages of the 81-760/761 series are being tested on the metro lines of the Azerbaijani capital.
"The testing and adaptation process of new carriages on the lines of
Baku Metro will last for six months," the metro management said.
As it was stated, this type of carriage is already used in the Moscow
metro. Baku Metro has not yet acquired the new type of carriages as
their testing has to be carried out. If the testing is successful and
relevant funds allocated from the state budget, these carriages can be
purchased for the underground of the Azerbaijani capital.
Baku Metro noted that in case a positive decision is taken, the new type of carriages will be purchased for the new lines.
"However, as the new lines are under construction, testing is carried out on older lines," Baku Metro said.
The new carriages are equipped with climate control and air
disinfection, as well as heating systems for passenger and driver
cabins.
At present, the length of Baku Metro lines is 34.6 kilometres and now
has two lines. In future the number of subway lines is planned to be
increased to five, the length up to 119 kilometres and the number of
stations up to 76.
The metro has been operating since 1967 and has 23 stations. A 20-year
programme for the development of the metro was adopted earlier.
