Only children may be exempt from military service in Azerbaijan

Only children may be exempt from military service in Azerbaijan again.

It was initiated by a group of MPs, the Azerbaijani Parliament told. It is expected to discuss the amendments to the law “On military service”. The proposal may be submitted for discussion during the spring session. If the amendments are made, it will be applied to only children.

Note that it was practiced in Azerbaijan in the past, but after the amendments made to the above-mentioned law in 2008, only children are also drafted.

Commenting on the issue, member of the parliament’s security and defense committee Zahid Oruj told that several MPs were in favor of these amendments: “Personally, my position is that, making amendments to the law, it is needed to organize the only children’s service, instead of fully exempting them from military service, because there are tens of thousands only-child-families in Azerbaijan. At the same time, these amendments may give impetus to many families to prefer only child.

Soldier, Jeyhun Gubadov, who died during military service last week, was the only child in the family.
