Annexes and amendments to the Election Code have been submitted for discussion at today’s meeting of the Azerbaijani Parliament.
Informing about the draft law, chairman of the Parliament’s committee on legal policy and state-building Ali Huseynli said that according to the document, the election day in the country is not a working day.
According to the Labor Code, if the election falls on holiday, it will be replaced by the Central Election Commission by another working day of the month. The amendment aims to regulate the citizens’ right to rest.
During the discussions, MP Igbal Aghazadeh complained about police’s prevention of his meeting with young people in Sumgayit. He noted that YAP executive secretary Ali Ahmadov didn’t face problems in his meeting in the regions. Aghazadeh also suggested 90-day election campaign.
Parliamentarian from YAP Siyavush Novruzov said in no country of the world the election period is 3-4 years.
“The politicians’ views can be publicized in media, internet. What is the problem? May be a party has nominated somebody as a presidential candidate. But his legal status is reflected in the Election Code. That person starts holding meetings before being registered as a candidate. The meetings held by Ali Ahmadov have been spoken about here. Ali Ahmadov holds meetings after informing the executive authorities in advance, he does not speak at tea houses,” he said.
MP Zahid Oruj mentioned that in Germany, France Prime Minister can be elected 8-9 times.
“The person, who is elected for a third term, assumes great responsibility and this is under the people’s will. In the parliamentary system Prime Minister forms the government. What is the difference?! Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and his party are facing the consequences of the parliamentary system, his people will also face it,” he said.
YAP Deputy Chairman, MP Ali Ahmadov said two months is the best period for election campaign.
The draft law was put to the vote and adopted.
