66th Cannes Film Festival opens with 'The Great Gatsby' premiere

The 66th Cannes Film Festival, the most prestigious film festival in Europe, opens on May 15. The festival will close on May 26. The program of 52 feature films will open with the premiere of "The Great Gatsby."

Russia will be presented by 24-year-old director Taisia Igumentsova with her debut work "Kick the Bucket."

The main program includes 20 films out of 52, including new works by Roman Polanski, Steven Soderbergh and the Coen brothers.

The jury of the festival this year is chaired by Steven Spielberg. Other members include such celebrities as Christoph Waltz and Nicole Kidman.

A large number of star guests is expected at the festival. Leonardo DiCaprio, the star of "The Great Gatsby has already arrived in the French resort city.

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the oldest film festivals in the world. It was conceived in 1939 and was first held in 1946.

In 2012, the Palme d'Or was awarded to the film by Michael Haneke, "Amour."
