Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture and Tourism comments on judgment regarding Togrul Narimanbekov’s burial in France

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Culture and Tourism Abulfas Garayev has commented on the scandal over the burial of famous Azerbaijani People's Artist Togrul Narimanbekov.

Garayev said that the Azerbaijani state is carrying out activities to bring his body to Azerbaijan.

According to the minister, Togrul Narimanbekov is a part of the Azerbaijani culture and people and one of the most prominent representatives of school of painting: “Of course, we want to bring him to Azerbaijan and bury him honorably. But another factor emerges here. Taking into account the position of his wife and minor child, the legislative body of the Republic of France has passed a decision on Togrul Narimanbekov’s burial in France. His spouse’s claim is based on the desire to regularly visit him. We, as the people and state, should agree with Togrul Narimanbekov’s burial in a foreign country. But the process is still being continued.”

The laureate of the USSR State Prize and People's Artist of Azerbaijan, individual pensioner of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Togrul Narimanbekov died at 83 on June 7. The second wife of the deceased wanted him to be buried in France. However, his daughter Asmar Narimanbekova opposed it. She demanded to bury her father in Azerbaijan and appealed to the French court in this regard.
