Louvre Museum presented a new gallery – the gallery of Islamic arts. Azerbaijan is also among the sponsors of the project . Six years in the making, the gallery will be opened to the public this summer, GoMap reports quoting the French newspapers. L’Express reports that the new exhibition is due to open in September 2012.
The Louvre’s director, Henri Loyrette said the project costs 98,5 million Euros. Azerbaijan is also among the sponsors of the project along with France, Kuwait, Oman and Morocco. Large contribution – 17 million Euros – was made by Saudi prince Al-Walid bin Talal. A further 10 million Euros is required to finish the building work.
The new gallery at the Louvre is an unusual structure, with a sail-like roof made up of glass and gold disks. Museum officials say that this is the biggest design feat undertaken since the famous glass pyramid 20 years ago. The world’s most famous art museum in Paris is dedicating 4,600 square metres to display the art works of Islam which will include approximately 18,000 pieces. Among the works of art on display will be carpets and fabrics as well as ceramics and other art works.
