Although most of us would rather be waterboarded than listen to 'Angels' by Robbie Williams, research by Lloyds Pharmacy has found that a large number of those suffering chronic pain found it a relieved symptoms. 40% of those surveyed said that they sound music soothing with Elton John's 'Candle In The Wind', Robbie's 'Angels' and Simon and Garfunkel's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' being the most popular.
Additionally it was found that young people garnered the most benefit from music with 66% feeling the effects. Pop music lead as the most effective genre with classical, rock and indie music following close behind, indicating obviously the the more laid back types of music will be likely to have the best effect.
Predominantly the effectiveness of music in this regard seems to be down to distraction, although Andrew Mawhinney of Lloyds Phramacy has said it has begun to trial using music at various practices. They may want to note however that for a few people 'Candle in the Wind' can provoke relentless mental agony.
