Birth rate in Azerbaijan hits 17-year high

As of January 1, 2012, the population of Azerbaijan amounted to 9 million 235 thousand people by rising 123.9 thousand or 1.4% compared with the previous year.
The State Statistics Committee says 53% of the population lives in the city, 47% - in rural areas. Males accounted for 49.6% of the population, women - 50.4%. There are 1,017 women per 1,000 men.
“Life expectancy for the newborns of last year was 73.6, including for boys – 70.9, for girls – 76.2. During the reporting period, 175.4 thousand babies were born. This is the highest indicator in the last 17 years. 53.8% of newborn were boys, 46.2% - girls. Last year, 1,506 twins and 33 triplets were born in the country”, told the Committee.
