Fuzuli city

Fuzuli, one of the largest populated areas of Azerbaijan, had been established in 1827. In 1930 the rayon was established on the basis of Garabulag area and named Garyagin. Rayon center was Garyagin settlement and the rayon covered all villages located on Gozluchay bank, Kondalanchay bank, Arax bank and both sides of Fuzuli - Agdam highway. In 1959 Garyagin rayon was renamed as Fuzuli rayon in the honor of great poet Mahammad Fuzuli, during his 400th anniversary. The rayon had been completely occupied by August 23, 1993.

In January 1994, 22 settlements of the rayon were freed from occupation under leadership of national leader Haydar Aliyev. At present, there are 54 thousand people in the region. 30 thousand km2 area has been freed from occupation. Since 1997 there have been started economic reforms in free areas of the rayon and lands allocated to peasants.
